A magical place of tranquil ambience and scenic beauty, is divided into eight sections by the nine rivers that convergein the town, with many stone bridges, some looking like rainbows over the river. The town featuresmany ancient, well-preserved and beautiful buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The poetic, almost fairytale, nature of this picturesque little town makes it a very popular tourist attraction that is frequently depicted in Chinese landscape painting – and visitors find it easy to imagine that they are part of a painting themselves, such is the beauty of this earthly paradise.
Wood Root Carving Museum
Around 300 spectacularroot sculptures are on display in the museum's four exhibition rooms. Each of the rooms has a name: Guinness World Records, Eagles, Buddhist Images and the Underwater World.
Xitang is the ‘home of buttons’ in China;the town manufactures the majority of buttons made in the country. The museum has a fascinating collection of over 1,000 buttons, including antique and new buttons made fromhorn, ivory, silver silk, brass, mother of pearl and bamboo to name but a few of the materials used.
The most distinctive difference between Xitang and other ancient waterside towns is this long waterside corridor. The total length of this ceilinged corridor is more than 1,000 metres; much like the long corridor in the Summer Palace in Beijing.
